Getting Started with Google Ads on a Small Budget

Google Ads campaign on a laptop screen

One of the biggest myths we hear from small business owners is that Google Ads only works with a large budget. In reality, a small, well-structured campaign often outperforms a large, poorly targeted one. Here's how we'd approach it if we were starting from scratch.

Start With a Single, Specific Goal

Before touching the Ads dashboard, decide what a "win" looks like — a phone call, a form submission, a purchase. Campaigns that try to do everything at once (branding, leads, sales) tend to waste budget figuring out what they're actually optimizing for.

Go Narrow on Keywords First

With a limited daily budget, broad keywords will burn through your spend on clicks that were never going to convert. Start with a small set of highly specific, high-intent keywords — the kind someone types when they're close to making a decision — and expand only once you understand what's working.

Write Ads That Pre-Qualify Clicks

It sounds counterintuitive, but a slightly narrower, more specific ad often performs better on a small budget than a broad, appealing one. If your ad clearly states price range, location or service specifics, you'll get fewer clicks — but a higher share of them will actually convert.

Send Traffic to a Page Built to Convert

Never send paid traffic to your homepage by default. A dedicated landing page that matches the ad's promise — with one clear call to action — will convert at a meaningfully higher rate than a general page trying to serve every visitor.

On a small budget, your job isn't to get more clicks — it's to make sure almost every click you do get has a real chance of converting.

Review Weekly, Not Daily

Small budgets generate less data, so daily fluctuations can be misleading. We recommend reviewing performance weekly, giving each keyword and ad variant enough clicks to judge fairly before making changes.

If this all sounds like more than you have time to manage alongside running your business, that's exactly the kind of thing our performance marketing team handles day to day.
